about

In the 1990's, PepsiCo, Inc had an ad campaign based around the concept of "Been There, Done That". The concept centered around extreme sports activities: www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFJYzyzvK1U but went so far as to include action film celebrities like Jackie Chan: www.youtube.com/watch?v=376-b7MQ2Gc Pepsi Cola, & the extra caffeinated Mountain Dew beverages were the main focus of this campaign, but the TacoBell company (part of PepsiCo, Inc) has also embraced the "extreme" lifestyle choice, broadcasting snowboarding, skateboarding, BMX bicycling, etc on flat screen television sets at various restaurant locations. Not to go too far off topic, but energy drink companies today such as RedBull, Monster, & Rockstar sponsor/collaborate with sporting events, video games, concerts, & other awesome things. Budweiser/Bud Light sponsors concerts. Skittles sponsors pro-wrestling events. The fact is, in order to be a conscientious consumer, living in a democratic/capitalist nation, one must take the time to consider what they purchase. When J.J. Styles was a teenager, he was encouraged to distrust corporations, & products. This was an easy thing to do, because he had very little money until adulthood, & also felt wronged by various bad purchases he felt forced to make. Prior to that, as a child, J.J. was concerned with the products in comic books, video game & rock music magazines (Wizard, Game Players, & SPIN). As J.J. became more hateful, he lost touch with the things that truly inspired him. Luckily, J.J. survived his corporate hate phase, & manages to still learn about the things he rejected to this very day. J.J. was also encouraged to distrust education, employment, government, religion, & any trust based relationship in general. Luckily, through perseverance, consideration, understanding, & experimentation, J.J. has found a comfortable balance with just about all there is. Distrust is a good place to start, followed by careful experimentation. Some people say "time is on your/my side" (Rod Stewart, The Rolling Stones). What that means is debatable. The truth is, time is NOT on your/my side. Time runs out quick, especially if one dies young. If a person wastes their time pursuing bullshit, their life will amount to bullshit. It is important to figure out what you're about early in life, so one can pursue, support, & represent that which they are. If people say "Mountain Dew Sucks! PepsiCo, Inc kills animals for fast food, gives people diabetes from corn syrup, & just simply costs too much", one needs to decide if they are correct, or not. If Mountain Dew tastes bad, then this is moot. BUT! If Mountain Dew tastes good, then one can either live in denial, or decide the benefits outweigh the risks/deficits. Diabetes? Perhaps Diet Dew? Vegan? Then drink dew, & don't eat at KFC/TacoBell/Pizza Hut. Corporate entities, & individuals, get the message after time, & profit loss. Perhaps KFC/TacoBell/Pizza Hut have healthy, and/or vegan options available, because of informed consumers making buying decisions. Life is about decisions, having a choice is important. Choosing to reject or accept, ignore or avoid, whatever it may be, as long as we have choices, we know we are free. If a band member says "I can't practice/perform, because I'll be with/at work/on a date/another band", you will either have to tolerate that, or not. If a significant other says "You can't do (fill in the blank)", you will either tolerate, or not. If a boss says "You will do (fill in the blank) or you're fired", you will, or you won't. J.J. has lived the automatic response life, & witnessed it. It is an ugly, depraved, humiliating way to live. As long as one has a choice to make, they should exercise it. The Canadian band NoMeansNo has a song called "Tired Of Waiting", the lyrics state: "I got tired of waiting because i found out/There's only a fine line between Biding one's time and wasting one's time/Do you know what i mean?/I got tired of waiting that's all". J.J. wants to convey that exact same sentiment with "Do What You Do". Life is much shorter than anyone truly realizes. Dedicating your life to a job, lover, family member, or pursuit that you do not need to, is wasting your life. Dedicating your life to something that makes you want to live life, now that is well spent time. Understanding acceptable, or unacceptable sacrifices. Regret, or acceptance. Tolerance, or rejection. Do what you do, and don't ever let anybody stop you. Because time flies by, and you are going to die.
